CEO and Founder of Wind Mobile Tony Lacavera Leaves Company To Launch New Venture

The CEO and the founder of Wind Mobile, Tony Lacavera, has announced that he is stepping down from his leadership post and has moved his shares to Egyptian company, Orascom, which will give the telecom an indirect 99.3 percent share in Globalive Wireless Management Corp, parent firm of Wind.

Lacavera founded Wind Mobile back in 2008 and in this short span his company attracted 600,000 subscribers from Vancouver, Toronto, Edmonton, Ottawa and Calgary. In spite of this fact the leading entrepreneur decided to leave his company to launch a new venture by the name of Globalive Capital in 2013. But for the time being, Lacavera will perform his duties as the CEO of Wind Mobile’s and will later just serve the company in the capacity of a non-functioning member or Honorary Chair.

Explaining his decision Lacavera said that, “As an entrepreneur, my vision was to ignite change across the wireless landscape in Canada, bringing more competition, better prices and superior service to Canadians. And that is exactly what we did. Now that I am confident Wind Mobile Canada is on a course for long-term success, I can focus on launching Globalive Capital to make targeted investments in companies that share my entrepreneurial vision and continue to support innovation through new and emerging entrepreneurs.”

However, some people believe that this was not a wise move by Lacavera, as Financial Post’s Jamie Sturgeon wrote that his departure from Wind Mobile will leave “serious doubts that a class of new wireless entrants Ottawa expressly shepherded to market a few years ago will ever have the intended outcome of introducing meaningful and lasting competition in a wireless market still overwhelmingly ruled by Rogers Communications Inc., BCE Inc. and Telus Corp.”

On the other hand, Chief Executive Officer of Orascom, Ahmed Abou Doma was all praise for the Canadian entrepreneur, as he said that, “Anthony Lacavera has been the face and the voice of Wind Mobile Canada.  I wish to pay tribute to his leadership in making Wind Mobile the official alternative to the ‘Big Three’ incumbents in Canada.”
