Various reports have earlier claimed that the inexpensive edition of th eiPhone is going be cheaper in price as compared to the original iPhone. In fact, to bring the cost down Apple has given the contract of developing the low-cost iPhone to Pegatron, an arch rival of Hon Han Precision, also known as Foxconn and a long time partner of the Cupertino-based company. China Times has now reported that the CEO of Pegatron, T.H. Tung, has officially made it known during a shareholder meeting that inexpensive version of iPhone would not be that cheap, as many believe it to be. Tung’s statement has made it clear that with the low-cost iPhone, Apple is actually looking to target the mid-level market instead of a lower level.
During that shareholders meeting Tung also divulged that low cost iPhone is often described as “cheap,” but it can be pretty expensive for consumers. Indicating several existing products of the California-based tech giant the CEO of Pegatron also made it known on this occasion that cheap is not the right word to describe Apple’s products.
Tung’s statement has now almost confirmed that Pegatron has been able to win a contract to make the much-talked about budget iPhone from the iOS device maker, as previously the Taiwan-based company caught the lime light when rumours surfaced that it has successfully secured a deal to produce a limited number of inexpensive iPhones.
Similar reports have also suggested that Pegatron was hiring a staff of 40,000 workers roughly about a month ago, which points out that the company is going to assemble the inexpensive version of the iPhone.
Quoting its sources, China Times has also asserted that the inexpensive edition of iPhone has already hit the production stage and according to a rough estimate about 13 to 15 million units of the mid-level smartphone will be shipped in the third quarter of this year.
The aforementioned report has surfaced just a few days after Apple’s long time partner Foxconn announced that it has joined hands with Taiwan Mobile, a Taiwan-based operator, to develop low-cost A5 smartphones for the company, which clearly suggests that Hon Hai has decided to look beyond the iOS device maker.
However, this was not the first partnership that Foxconn has formed after Apple decided to give a limited contract of developing low cost iPhones to Pegatron. The company has also inked a deal Mozilla to produce Firefox-based smartphones.
In addition to this, Foxconn also has plans to produce numerous electronic devices under its own brand name.
