Debate on the warranty policies of Apple in China began at the start of this month after the mouthpiece of Chinese government, China Central Television and other state controlled media channels criticized the California-based tech giant for treating customers in the region unfairly when they make warranty claims or submit their device for repair. The Chinese media says, in contrast to other countries, Apple has adapted different standards when it comes to claiming warranty and repair procedures in China. Therefore, now it appears that the Chinese government has decided to go after Apple in order to get a response from the Cupertino-based company in an article that was published in People’s Daily newspaper. The paper also asked why the company was not replying to interview requests it has received, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Here are the exact words from the WSJ’s report:

“The People’s Daily newspaper, the party’s traditional mouthpiece, in a front-page article on Monday accused the electronics maker of declining journalists’ requests for interviews and issuing an “empty and self-praising” response to a recent critical report by China’s national television broadcaster. The article was accompanied by a cartoon with a figure representing the company, saying, “Apple statement: empty.

Though it can be difficult to predict government behavior based on news coverage in China’s state-run media, analysts said the string of attacks suggested that the government is considering doing more to encourage the growth of domestic smartphone companies and eat away at dominant foreign companies, such as Apple.”

Preliminary reports asserted that Apple was offering different services to its Chinese customers as compared to the customers of other countries. For instance the iOS device maker was giving recycled hardware or repaired phones to customers in China, whereas in the US Apple was providing brand new substitute devices. Following these reports some Chinese celebrities have also made posts against Apple over internet that some believe was a part of a joint effort to attack the US-based multinational company.

To counter this assault Apple has posted a message over its Chinese website just a few days ago, in which company has asserted that its warranty policies are “more or less the same” in every region. Below is the complete statement from Apple:

Apple “fixes phones with new components but reattaches the original back case.” The Company also “provides a 90-day guarantee on repairs, longer than the 30 days required by Chinese law. Apple’s Chinese warranty is more or less the same as in the U.S. and all over the world.”
