The importance of social media and technology can be judged from the fact that they are both playing a crucial role on the politics front as they served huge roles in the recent US elections and the Arab Spring before that. This not only includes Twitter, Instagram or Facebook, but other mediums as well as politicians were getting in touch with the general public through all means because they believe that this will have a profound impact on their campaign or governance.
Considering this ever increasing role of social media and technology, Cisco Systems in Canada agreed to donate $2 million to The University of Regina over a period of 10 years in order to establish the Research Chair in e-governance.
The purpose of creating this position was to find out how governments can use technology to communicate more effectively with other governments, general public and businesses. To the extent social media is concerned it is a huge part of this research, as the Research Chair will also look to enhance the usage of file sharing, video and online cooperation as well.
The press release of this agreement between Cisco and The University of Regina also noted that, “e-governance research may include developing best practices in sharing government information, promoting government services, recruiting and retaining public sector employees and ‘virtual government.'”
The President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Regina, Vianne Timmons said on this occassion, “Through this partnership we will help move public sector governance policy and practice forward to keep pace with the rapid evolution of communication technology in areas such as social media”.
She also added that, “They didn’t just give us $2 million and tell us what to do with it”. So even if the result of this research would be “unexpected” it is expected from the researchers that they will publish them.
