Even with the latest smartphones on the market, text messages are still very popular. The main reason behind the trend is that telecom carriers across the globe offer cheap SMS packages to customers. Canadians are no different from other nations in this regard, and every passing year the number of users sending text messages also increases in the country. This is clearly apparent from the latest data provided by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association in a report by the organization on Monday, January 28. According to the data, the third quarter of the previous year Canadians sent 24.3 billion text messages which is also the highest number recorded so far.

The 24.3 billion text messages mean that Canadians have sent about 3,000 messages every second. During the initial nine months of 2012 the total number of text messages that Canadians had sent was 71.5 billion, whereas in 2011 during the same period the grand total was 57 million. At this point in time CWTA has not got full data of 2012, but it is highly likely that not only the number of text messaging during the previous year will exceed 2011’s gross total 78 billion, but it will also touch the 100 billion mark for the first time in history.

The reason for believing so is that the number of text messaging for December 25, 2012 accounts to only 424 million. Therefore, it would not be a surprise if CWTA announces gross total of 100 billion text messages during the last year.
