Canadian smartphone manufacturer, BlackBerry, has received some mixed news from the US Defense Department after it was announced that the latest BlackBerry 10 devices including the PlayBook tablet have gotten approval for use on the government run network. Samsung also received approval for its products that operate with Google’s mobile operating system, Android. The Pentagon is expected to also approve Apple’s iOS platform and device soon.

In the statement, Pentagon spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Damien Pickart stated that, “This is a significant step toward establishing a multi- vendor environment that supports a variety of state-of-the-art devices and operating systems.”

The move to establish a multi- vendor environment by the US government may not be a good thing for BlackBerry because the US military previously used BlackBerry smartphones exclusively because of the security provided by the Canadian firms software. Senior vice president of security, Scott Totzke, has stated that the new BB10 has the same focus on safety and claims that the platform, “offers a rich, highly responsive mobile computing experience, along with BlackBerry’s proven and validated security model.”

BlackBerry was the only provider of smartphones and mobile devices to the Pentagon’s 600,000 users because Canadian firms encryption and security were considered top notch. The new push by the US government department to establish an environment where other vendors also have access could lead BlackBerry to lose out as employees switch from legacy BlackBerry devices to newer smarpthones and tablets powered by Apple and Google.

The government sector was one area where BlackBerry had managed to keep its enterprise services dominant. However that has started to change in the last year and large organizations have begin to ditch the Canadian firm in favor of other platforms. In February, Home Depot, stated that the business would be moving from BlackBerry to Apple’s iPhone with 10,000 employee subscribers.

The Canadian technology giant has stopped some of the loses with the launch of its BlackBerry 10 platform. The firm has been able to keep several enterprise clients to help bolster its reputation and keep its business afloat. Recently the Canadian Tire Corporation chose BlackBerry devices as their official smartphone within Canada. This will make BlackBerry  meaning staff that work at Canadian Tire Corporation and sister concerns like Mark’s, Sport Chek, and Atmosphere will be using BlackBerry 10 smartphones. The Canadian firm claims they will be giving their employees “several thousand units in the coming months,” which will include the all-touch  Z10 and physical keyboard Q10.
