A recruitment platform called DeveloperAuction has created what they believe to be a transparent and effective means for startups to hire engineering talent. Co-founded by 99designs’ Matt Mickiewicz, the company ended its first auction on August 31st of this year. The event saw 88 engineers showcase their talent via online profile to a group of 142 startups including big names Dropbox and Quora. All in all, $30M in offers were made to various engineers.
Lasting two weeks in all, auctions happen in succession with the next on beginning in the middle of this month. Applications are currently being accepted requiring a GitHub profile, a Computer Science degree from either MIT or Stanford or be currently employed by big players Google, Zynga, Facebook, Twitter, Apple, Yelp and Square. Employees are not required to accept the highest offer however if their interview goes well and they accept the job they are entitled to the full amount of the bid.
Startups receive access to engineer profiles for their perusal. The chance of seeing one of their own employees in the auction can be prevented via online filters however even without said feature there have been no complaints about the service overall. All applicant employers are screened with AngelList and startups are analyzed for capital raised and profitability.
The company’s employment regions are currently limited to the Bay Area as well as Boston however expansion into New York and Denver are logical and highly likely steps given the demand from employers in those areas. The company will also likely expand auctions to include UX/UI Designers and sales people.
