Created by neuroscientists from Stanford University, Lumosity aims to improve core cognitive abilities through games. The company has been on a tear, increasing revenues by 25% quarter over quarter since its inception in 2007.

That type of growth as well as 25 million members, 10 million of which have joined in the past year has earned the company a $31.5 million Series D round. The round was led by Discovery Communications, with existing investors Menlo Ventures, FirstMark Capital, Harrison Metal and Norwest Venture Partners. All in all the company has raised over $70 million dollars in funding.

The website and iOS app currently feature a portfolio of over 40 games that increase cognitive skills ranging from memory, attention retention, dexterity, processing prowess as well as the ability to solve problems. According to TechCrunch, the service’s users improve their working memory by more than 10% and divided attention by 20% after 10 hours of game play.

The data the company is able to collect from gameplay has allowed the company to amass the largest human cognitive performance database in the world, leveraging this information to better learn the human brain. What could come of learning more about the brain’s functions? Anything from customizing brain games to help learning disorders, improve memory and problem solving as well as increase overall brain health for all kinds of people.

People in over 180 countries have played and enjoyed games on Lumosity, and we encourage you to do so as well.
