Intel, the American chip maker which has prided itself since the 1990s for desktops with Intel Inside, is finally moving away from the declining PC market. It is the end of an era as Intel recently announced that it was slowly winding down its motherboard business for consumers once it launches its new range of CPUs.
The Intel Channel Board Division which builds motherboards for consumers will be slowly ramped down over the next three years according to senior Intel executives as the company will shift focus to other areas.
However, Intel is not completely abandoning the desktop market as it will now concentrate its efforts on other areas to further improve the consumer experience. The company will now concentrate on developing the Next Unit of Computing (NUC), reference design developments to help Intel’s partner chipset makers and other areas.
Intel spokesman Daniel Snyder in an interview with Maximum PC said that the winding down of the motherboard business does not mean Intel is giving up on desktops altogether:
“The Desktop segment continues to be a major focus for Intel with hundreds of products across many sub-segments and applications. Intel expects the broad and capable [desktop] motherboard ecosystem (i.e. Asus, Gigabyte, MSI and many others) to fully support Intel’s growing roadmap and large worldwide customer base.”
This is a big move by Intel which has a long history of reliable motherboards even though it was never the preferred brand for tech enthusiasts. The shutting down of the motherboard division may yet suggest a strategic shift by Intel from the declining PC market.
