The integration of technology into the various aspects of our lives has improved and simplified a plethora of daily tasks. Similarly, the  introduction of technology in sports has also made things easy for both officials and players as well. Goal line technology in soccer is a good example in this regard, as it was developed to remove human error from the game and ensures a fair and just outcome.

Siine, a European startup has introduced a smartphone app called Referee Pro that has the opportunity to completely revolutionize the game of soccer as referees will use it to record events instead of their notepads and to hand out red or yellow cards to players. This latest innovation was used for the very first time yesterday in Mexico during an indoor league soccer game that featured various former soccer stars.

The referees in the game used Referee Pro on their Samsung Galaxy S III, which was connected with a Twitter account, showing who made the foul and who scored goals instantly. In addition to this, referees also used signalling interfaces in this app to avoid laborious typing.

Since Siine has developed this smartphone app in compliance with official guidelines of FIFA as well as with the help of top referees and professional footballers of Mexico it can be used at both official and professional levels.

According to Ed Maklouf, founder of Siine, “The beauty of football is it is a truly global standard. The referees have the same job in Madagascar as they do in New York City – the same rules, the same beautiful game. That means that Referee Pro, as an innovation that helps football, is applicable worldwide and can become as much a part of the football toolkit as the whistle or the line flag.”

Siine has plans to work with different organisations of referees in the UK, US and Spain to improve Referee Pro while gaining more recognition. It remains to be seen to what extent issuing of a yellow or red card through a smartphone will remain a viable option and how well adopted it will be, however the concept and various features make it an excellent idea.
