You might remember TQ reported last month that some leaked images have surfaced online which suggests that South Korean electronics maker Samsung is readying a smart watch that could play music, receive messages and make calls like a phone. Now exactly a month after that report, Samsung has finally confirmed that it is making a smart watch for quite some time now, which would compete against the alleged iWatch from Apple and the recently launched Pebble watch. The confirmation came from the Executive President of Samsung’s Mobile Business, Lee Young Hee, who disclosed it during an interview with Bloomberg.

This was the first time that someone from Samsung has officially talked about the smart watch that has been in the development stage for a long time now, as Lee said that, “We’ve been preparing the watch product for so long. We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them.”

However, Lee did not give out any specific details of the product or its launch date, but it is notable that in contrast to Samsung, Apple so far has not disclosed or even hinted about its alleged iWatch in spite of rumours have been running rampant, especially in the past few months. It is speculated that Apple’s smart watch would be running its own iOS operating system and may see the first light sometime during this year.

On the other hand, according to the alleged leaked images of Samsung’s smart watch it will be called Galaxy Altius. These leaked images appeared online just a few weeks after reports came in that Apple has hired a team of 100 people to work on its wearable computer like device. The rumours of Apple’s alleged iWatch are not new, as they have been whirling in the tech world since the advent of the iPod Nano watchband.

However, these speculations caught fire when a report came out of China in December last year. Since then several sites have either revealed patents related to the wearable computer like device or gave us an idea about how Apple’s iWatch might look like by revealing their own designs. Nevertheless, the interesting thing is that now Samsung has confirmed it is developing a smart watch and their is high probability that Apple’s iWatch is also real and it is currently in the development stage.
