In its persistent and aggressive bid to become the web’s most popular website, Facebook has added a new feature known as the Listen button onto the pages of all musicians and recording artists. The button, which is similar in appearance and location to the well-known Like button allows a selection of the artist’s music to be played immediately on the Facebook music streaming application of your choice such as Spotify, Rdio or Slacker. Like all other applications within Facebook, if you have yet to download an app that can be used for a particular task, you will be prompted to select the one that is most popular with your contacts as well as across the site’s expansive social network.

The button presents a simple and highly effective way for people to instantly sample and listen to what an artist has to offer in terms of music. Based on their connection with what they hear can then opt to “like” the artist, and thus introduce their music to their contacts via the News Feed we have all come to expect within Facebook.

Although the Listen button is currently exclusive to the web version of the site, expect that to change in the near future as more and more people spend time on Facebook via their mobile devices than their standard laptops and desktops. The feature would allow actual media consumption by users as they listen, comment and like artists and songs, meaning more time spent on the mobile application than they normally would in checking their friend’s updates. We also anticipate that in the future as new singles are released, they will be immediately playable via the button, allowing them to be shared with almost instant feedback through the power of the social network.
