On December 21, Facebook gambled that the world was not coming to an end and released its latest mobile product, the Poke app. The app is for the iPhone and iPod Touch and mimics the ability of the popular Facebook feature available on the web version of the social network. Along with pokes, users can use the app to send videos, pictures and text messages to their friends on Facebook.

The new app’s most unique feature is that the message being sent through the Poke app lasts only seconds. Users can set the time the message will last from an option at the top center of the screen. Users can simply click on it to set the time from one second to ten seconds to deliver a message that is a maximum of a 120 characters long.

TechCrunch has reported that the Pokes are encrypted and that Facebook has a protocol that calls for deleting the encryption keys after two days from being read. The key backups that are stored in Facebook servers are then deleted within 3 month or 90 days which means that the data is not being stored permanently. Facebook has also given the user security options like report and block to keep the service clean.

The new Poke app is meant to compete against iOS apps like SnapChat which lets users send ten second or shorter messages and video.
