In flight internet service provider Gogo is going to be using new antennas to improve internet speeds and also allow more people to surf the web simultaneously on multiple air carriers. According to the company, the new equipment will not only double overall network capacity, it will also triple peak speeds. This will allow more passengers to check their email, browse the internet and watch short video clips throughout the cabin in flight.
Gogo users should be aware that they cannot get video streaming services as yet because it take up too much bandwidth. Gogo’s Chief Technology Officer Anand Chari explains that, “It is really not economically feasible on any wireless link. It’s just a lot more expensive to deliver a byte to an airplane.”
Gogo will be showing off its much improved services to journalists by taking them on test flights on November 18. The media filled flights will take off from Chicago but the company did mention details of the improvements that have been made for people that will not be able to make the trip.
Chari stated that Gogo started implementing the new antennas in September of 2012 and the firm expects 600 flights to have the new capabilities by the end of the year. Chari also mention that Gogo is experimenting with its pricing to give consumers more options and also manage its limited capacity. Prices for longer flights have seen a spike while the options to purchase just a few hours of service have also been implemented. Chari adds that, “We continue to do some price changes to make sure that demand and supply are kept in line and to make sure there is an acceptable user experience for everyone.”
