MediaCore is only one year old but the Canadian technology startup has already attracted international investment and attention. The company’s open source video Content Management System (CMS) platform helped it bring in $1 million of new capital from private angel investors Alex Khein and Pierre Andurand. This latest injection of cash has pushed MediaCore’s total fund raising to $1.5 million. The new found cash has also spurred talent acquisition at the Victoria-based firm with Alan Greenberg being roped in for the role of director of education.
Greenberg has some solid credentials and last worked as Apple’s Head of Higher Education in Europe and Asia. MediaCore’s interest in the Apple veteran stems from a recent shift in the start up’s business model. Initially the firm had believed that is video platform would be used in a corporate or business environment. However, the company soon realized that a lot of universities, colleges and corporate trainers were utilizing their software for education and sharing of information. This led to MediaCore’s re-focusing of goals and the focus on education.
The open source video and podcast CMS developer is now reporting a large number of universities and high school taking up it service. This shows the strategy is working and it seems the company is not disappointed that it changed direction from enterprise solutions for small and medium business to the education sector.
Stuart Bowness, CEO of MediCore, was positive about the changes at the firm and wrote on the company blog in June that, “Over the past four months we’ve been seeing a steady climb in the number of companies and institutions that are using MediaCore in either corporate training, knowledge sharing, or in learning and education, and we’re on our way to educating over 500,000 people by mid-summer.” The company head went on to say, “As we’ve worked with these organizations we have discovered that we’re insanely passionate about the future of education, and we see huge potential for our product to help make learning possible anytime, anywhere through video.”
To keep the momentum going in the education area MediaCore has been adding services that support education by making the creation and disbursement of video effortless. The services have been made free for teachers and offers iPhone apps for a number of important aspects of video lesson creation.
