Over the past few years, technology has evolved so quickly that things are becoming increasingly easy for internet users. For instance, in order to track information pertaining to specific topics, users on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter must simply add a # sign at the front of something in order to filter through the tremendous amount of content. As many of you know, this phenomenon of placing a # in front of a word is known as a hashtag and is an extremely popular means of targeting information.

A new Toronto based startup called TAGtivate has taken the hashtag phenomenon to a totally new level by using it as a means to share and curate content from the entire web. The site gives internet users the power to share, follow and organize topics of their choice at one source. With the use of this new website, users will be able to find their favourite topics by following the corresponding hashtags. After doing so, whenever new posts are done on any platformusing the corresponding hashtag, it will automatically be streamed to the user’s TAGtivate homepage.

The basal functionality of the site allows users to navigate through the less useful posts of their friends on Facebook, Twitter or uninteresting topics on other websites. Plus with TAGtivate, users can also share their favourite YouTube videos with other people by simply TAGtivating it under a corresponding hashtag. This means that they can do more work in less time, something that is increasingly important in an ever connected word.

The harnessing of hashtags within TAGtivate was developed by two young entrepreneurs Masih Mehdizadeh and Alireza Samar. The main aim of the young and energetic duo was to provide users with quality content that interests them through a grading process by other users in a simple and well-organized manner.   They hit upon this idea when one of them “was browsing through YouTube and came across a foreign (it was a Persian) music video which had received a lot of views. As I read through the comments, I realized that lots of non-persians from all around the world had commented on the music video and had shared their opinions. This was when I came to the realization that there is no single website on the net purposed for having people of different countries showcase their cultures, traditions, music, or anything else related to their country. So I thought of a web application where each country has its own hash tag and people can post contents under each hash tag and use other complementary hash tags to categorize the posts. Soon this idea started to evolve as we further discussed and developed it. We realized that it would make more sense to generalize the idea to cover any sort of content on the web; this way we could eliminate the (as we like to put it) ‘too many social networks, each with ONLY a specific purpose’ problem.”

Eventually this idea led them to a point where they are now ready to spread their wings in the business world. Currently both talented entrepreneurs are engaged in their studies. Alireza is a student of computer science with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence, whereas Masih is a student of physics with a focus on Condensed Matter Physics.   Alireza takes cares of the development side of the application. He has played an important role in giving life to TAGtivate. Masih on the other hand, is involved with the financial matters of TAGtivate, making the financial decisions and developing business strategies for this startup.   To the extent of their future plans are concerned, the skilful duo says that, “The next step would be to keep on developing the application and to present the users who have signed up on our landing page with an enticing experience which would make them want to share it with friends and family!”
