Frontier Developments, a British Game development firm, has finalized Halifax, Canada as the location for their latest expansion. The Canadian office will be used as the company’s North American center and should facilitate the development of mobile and tablet games. The Cambridge, England based company selected Halifax because of several factors including similarities between the new location and its global center in the UK.

Frontier Developments has been on the cutting edge of gaming in the UK and was looking to expand into other markets. David Walsh, president of Frontier Developments, explained why the Canadian city was chosen for the new studio and said, “Halifax has been on our radar as an attractive geographic and commercial environment within which we could create games since we met Nova Scotia Business Inc. a few years ago.” The tax breaks on offer by the government of Canada has roped in a number of gaming companies but Walsh is quite clear on the fact that it’s not just the favorable tax incentives that brought his company to Canada.

The President of Frontier Developments explains that talent was a key factor in the decision. Halifax has a number of universities producing high caliber graduates that can easily fit into most technology companies. The area is also growing its reputation as the place to be for businesses in the digital media industry. Walsh goes on to say, “The local universities produce talented graduates and the area is home to a growing cluster of indie developers, tech and media companies. This helped us to quickly establish the foundations of our studio in Halifax with a team that has a great mix of skills to complement our people in the UK, and expand our overall capacity.”

The entry of the British firm will add 20 new jobs to the area and most will be in development, design and programming. Frontier Developments is known for games that push the boundaries of development and design, making it a big win for the region. Stephen Lund, the President and CEO of Nova Scotia Business, is excited about the entry of the British firm into the region and believes that the company will help raise the profile of Nova Scotia. He went on to say that, “Frontier is exactly the type of world-class developer we want to attract to the province. Nova Scotia is now globally recognized as fertile ground for leading game development companies.”
