The chief physician of Asklepios Hospital for general and visceral surgery, Professor Karl Oldhafer, has created history when he along with his team of German physicians successfully took out two tumours from a liver with the help of an Apple iPad. With this successful operation Oldhafer, who was leading the team of physicians, has carried out the first of its kind of surgery in the history of medical field that is now referred to as ‘iSurgery’. To cover this historic surgery, a photographer from Reuters, Fabian Bimmer, was present in the operation theatre and he was able to snap some pretty outstanding pictures of the successful surgery during the operation.
It took Professor Oldhafer and his team three hours to remove the two tumours from the liver with the aid of iPad. Sharing his thoughts regarding the historic operation, Bimmer said that “I couldn’t imagine how an iPad would be helpful during an operation.” Oldhafer and his fellow surgeons actually used a unique method that helps physicians find critical structures like vessels and tumours in human organs by using an iPad. Describing about the moves of Professor during the surgery, the Reuters photographer shared that when Oldhafer was able to see the liver he then used the tablet to locate the two tumours in patient’s liver.
“The tablet uses augmented reality, which allows the liver to be filmed with an iPad and overlaid during an operation with virtual 3D models reconstructed from the real organ. Developed by Fraunhofer MEVIS in Bremen, this procedure helps locate critical structures such as tumors and vessels and is expected to improve the quality of transferring pre-operational resection plans into actual surgery, according to Bianka Hofmann from the institute.”
This surgery shows that latest technology such as iPad can prove pretty handful in the field of medical sciences, as now apart from being used during such operations developers can also develop other unique methods through them to make life more easy for the surgeons. Prior to this unique method, locating critical structures like vessels and tumours was not so easy for the physicians. In fact some of the patients failed to recover from such diseases, as doctors fails to know the exact cause of the problem.
So now with the introduction of this new methodology now patient suffering from such diseases will be able to receive proper treatment and cure without the fear of losing any organ.
