Fraunhofer Institute for Optronics has developed new glasses that allow users to go through documents without using their hands. The device is expected to revolutionize the way surgeons and mechanics works by allowing them to read and flip through instruction manuals while they work with their hands. Fraunhofer partnered up with COMEDD and TRIVISIO to bring the new device into reality.
The hands-free document navigation glasses have been developed using the latest technology and allows the user to use just their eyes to control the document they are viewing. The device is worn like a normal pair of glasses and allows the user to easily view his surroundings. They can activate the document by looking up at the horizon line, leading to the document being projected in front of the user. The document takes on a dimension of 3.3 feet and the person using thedocumented then able to manipulate the pages by glancing at arrows on the left and right of the projected page (back and forward respectively). This technology is different from Google Glasses which requires the user to move their head to control the glasses.
Fraunhofer is able to make the magiv happen by utilizing photodiodes and OLED pixels in the device. Photodiodes are used in place of a camera and are meant to track the movement of the eye. On the other hand, the OLED pixels are used to display the project document and arrows. The glasses are not self contained and they require a Windows or Linux computer which is attached to them to make them run properly.
