Canadian newspaper, The Globe and Mail, stated on October 14 that they will be using a new pay model for their digital media and content called Globe Unlimited. The Canada based news outlet had made comments earlier in the year that it planned on creating a paywall system in order to increase revenue and today’s announcement seems to be the first step in that direction. The current advertisement based model was not giving the company the returns it had wanted because of variances in the advertising market. According to the statement the new model will “change and enhance news publishing in this country.” The new system is expected to go live on October 22.

The newspaper has tied some part of access to digital content to their print paper by giving unlimited access to their website and apps to customers that have bought a five- or six-day subscription to the printed newspaper. However, the weekend-only subscribers will have to shell out $5 a month to get unlimited access to the digital content. Users that have no print subscription can try out the digital content with a one-month 99-cent trial which will become a $20 a month subscription.

Readers who want free news should not despair because overall most of the content on the newspapers website will still be free. For example users can still watch unlimited videos, read stock quotes and view letters to the newspaper’s editor. Furthermore, any one that clicks through to an article or other type of content through Twitter, Facebook or a search engine will not get a deduction on the monthly cap.
