As of October 4, Canada officially has the Glooko Logbook app and Glooko MeterSync Cable for Apple’s iOS. Glooko offers an innovative solution for diabetics by giving users the ability to use their smartphone as a simple and effective logbook. Glooko will be demonstrating their solution at the Canadian Diabetes Association conference taking place in Vancouver so that Canadians can get a closer look at the abilities of the app.
Glooko should be able to find a fairly large audience for its app and cable connector because according to the Canadian Diabetes Association the number of diabetics in Canada has double since 2000. The disease is expected to cost Canada 16 billion dollars per year in healthcare costs and will affect almost 11% of Canadians by 2020. It is not all bad news and it is a well established fact that people with Type 2 diabetes control the disease by changing their diet and exercising more. They can keep tabs on their progress by using a logbook or a product like Glooko.
Glooko has a very innovative solution that uses the Glooko MeterSync Cable to let users connect their iPhones, iPod or other iOS devices to 17 different blood glucose meter types. The cable allows the users to directly transfer their blood glucose readings to their logbook on the app. This eliminates errors that may be cause by human errors during manual entries. The one-tap process makes the Glooko solution not only fast but highly accurate.
Glooko is based out of Silicon Valley but the company is linked to Canada through co-founder Sundeep Madra and Chamath Palihapitiya. Both men have ties to Canada professionally and personally. They also believe that their solutions give users better management abilities to help control their disease. Palihapitiya, who is also a founder of The Social+Capital Partnership, stated that, “Our investments in companies like Glooko hit squarely at the premise that if you can quantify yourself and better understand your body, you can more proactively manage for prevention instead of treatment and emergency care. If you can become a better pro-active self manager about your health, it’s better for your well-being, easier on your wallet, and more efficient for the Canadian health care system overall.”
Glooko is offering its Logbook app for free on the iTunes App Store. However, users in Canada will need to buy the Glooko MeterSync Cable and the Glooko IR Adapter from Well.ca.
