When Google launched its Chromebook many saw it as toll that general consumers would purchase as a second computing device for the home. That has been true in some respects but Google’s push into schools has been the real story about the search giants web-centric laptops. The California technology giants long term commitment to the Chromebook looks to be paying off in schools and according to the company, 2,000 schools around the globe utilize the Chromebook in their classrooms. At first that sounds like a small number for a global figure but what is impressive is that this number has grown quickly and was only half three months ago.

The Chromebooks rapid growth was highlighted at the Florida Educational Technology Conference by Jaime Casap of Global Education. He also talked about the successes in a blog post where he mentioned that deployments included diverse location like Transylvania County Schools in the rural part of North Carolina which introduced 900 Chrembooks to its students. Other schools include Catholic prep school, St.Thomas Aquinas High School, which has 2,200 Chromebooks running on their Florida campus. The Bay Area’s urban charter network Rocketship Education also has 1,100 Chromebooks for its students.

Overall the deployments are a good sign for Google an its efforts. If schools keep buying into the Chromebook idea Google is set to benefit along with hardware partners like Lenovo. Other partners such as Acer have also reported the Chromebook making inroads it other sectors. The company has claimed that its C7 Chromebook that sells for $199 makes up 5 to 10 percent of its shipments to the U.S.
