Nonprofit organizations the world over are always looking at ways to cut costs and stretch the value of their funds as much as possible so they can achieve their organizational goals. Most NGO’s appreciate any help they can get from volunteers and many also like to work with large businesses because of the expertise and funding they can provide. Canadian nonprofit organizations should be pleased to know that they now have the chance to get Google in their corner through the search giants community grants program. Google Canada is looking for local organizations that would like to apply for the funding. However there are some requirements that the NGO’s will need to fulfill. Google is asking that organizations that make efforts to increase access to technology, boost curiosity in science and technology among the youth of Canada, or organizations that work on initiatives to create a greener and cleaner earth should apply for the grants.
Google has stated that the money they wish to give out is expected to help non profits that are working on closing the digital divide. This means that groups that help communities get access to technology have a good chance of receiving a grant from the technology giant. The company also wants to support organizations that are working on reducing the human races carbon foot print along with NGO’s that are promoting alternates to tradition transport. Other initiatives that Google is interested in include the training of NGO staff to utilize web based tools and technology. The search engine also wants to work with organizations that are promoting science, technology, engineering, and math to Canadian students.
Google Canada’s Leslie Church says that, “When evaluating proposals, we’ll consider an organization’s location and geographic impact, the measurable impact to the community, the extent to which Google’s in-kind or volunteer resources may help maximize the impact, and the organization’s track record on related programs.”
Google is accepting application until April 15 from organizations located in Toronto, Montreal and Waterloo.
Google has always portrayed itself as a company that wishes to do good and the community grants play an important part in creating this image. The advancement of technology among the general population and the shortening of the digital divide are very specific projects that Google has pursued all over the world with varying amounts of success.
