American technology giant Google has stated that it is starting a new program that will bring Chromebooks to financially strapped schools in a partnership with DonorsChoose.org. This holiday season teachers will have the chance to request that their class rooms get Samsung Series 5 Chromebooks for $99. The low price includes management and support and is a huge drop form the products normal retail price of $399. The search engine also made public that 1,000 schools had started using Chromebooks since the launch of the internet based devices. The entire program is scheduled to run only to December 21, 2012.

The campaign will be run like most others on DonorsChoose.org and teachers will be able to post to the site with orders of a maximum of 30 Chromebooks. Once the funding goal has been reached, Google partner Lakeshore Learning will ship the Chromebooks to the requesting teacher’s classroom.

Google Chrome OS was launched with the hope that it would overtake conventional laptops as people learn to save and utilize programs and data from the cloud. The idea has not caught on with the general public as quickly as Google had hoped and new tablet computers have taken over a lot of the marketplace. One area where the Chromebook has seen traction is education. The cheaper devices are quickly maturing and classroom seem to be a very good fit for the Chromebook and the many advantages it has to offer.
