Google has been involved in talks with authorities of the City of Provo for quite some time now, in order to reach an agreement to launch Google Fiber, a TV and Internet service, in the city. These talks finally proved fruitful for the search engine giant and on Tuesday, July 23rd, residents of Provo received an email from the Fiber team of Google, which informed them that the multinational company has finalised the deal with the City of Provo and now its TV and Internet services will be made available to the urban area. Here is what the Google Fiber team has written in the email sent to the residents of City of Provo:
“Hello, Provo!
Goodbye loading bars.
We are excited to announce that Google Fiber is officially coming to Provo! Yesterday, we officially completed our agreement with the City of Provo, and we are looking forward to bringing you gigabit Internet and Google Fiber TV service. Over the next few months, we will be upgrading the existing fiber network in Provo to make it even faster. We hope to connect our first customers in Provo later this year, and will have more information to share this fall.
In the meantime, you can read all about the official announcement from Provo Mayor John Curtis.
We can’t wait to see you all in Provo!
– The Google Fiber Team”
The roll-outs of fibre is moving more swiftly than ever before, as Google is planning to start providing the Fiber service to the city residents later this year. In addition to this, Google has also prepared a sign-up form for the residents of Provo, so the Mountain View-based company could update interested people about the rollout of the Fiber service in the city.
Apart from this, FierceTelecom has reported that Google has also finalised another deal that will enable it to acquire the failing fiber network iProvo for an amount of just $1. This deal really upset the rival network, CenturyLink and the company decided to challenge the acquisition by sending a letter to the Provo City Council protesting the deal. However, unluckily CenturyLink was not able to stop Google from acquiring its rival fiber company iProvo. So now it will be an interesting situation when Google will start its internet and TV services in the Provo city and competes against CenturyLink. It remains to be seen how Century will react to the top tech company.
