When Google bought Nik Software sometime ago, the connection between the two firms did not make much sense at first blush. Nonetheless, when the software company released content sharing application akin to Facebook’s Instagram, the association began to bring things into perspective.

The name of that aforementioned app from Nik Software is Snapseed and it features vry similar functions to those made famous by Instagram. Users are able to edit and share their images through various social networking websites like Facebook or Google+ with the Snapseed platform.

However, this original version was made exclusively for iOS devices and is priced at a rather unappealing $4.99 price point. Appeasing its Android users, Google has launched a free version of this image editing app on its in-house operating system possessing the same features and functionality that won Snapseed the title of top iPad app in the previous year.

On this occasion, Senior Vice President of Google, Vic Gundotra cited in the company’s official blog that, “Having welcomed Nik to the Google family, we’re excited to bring their Snapseed app (last year’s iPad app of the year) to Android.”

Android users can not only take pleasure in using the excellent image editing app, but they also will not have to pay anything for it, unlike Apple device users.

Besides this, Google has ensured that this latest Snapseed app will appropriately integrate with Google+, so users can select a post to specific communities and circles. This seems to suggest that Google is aiming at the Facebook Group, however for now that remains to be seen.

With this free Android edition of Snapseed, Google is looking to extend its reach because now more people will likely download this image editing app as it offers a non social networking component like Instagram does.
