On November 21, Google made public the updated version of its desktop mapping service which will now have indoor maps. Previously, only the Android version of Google Maps had floor plans but thanks to the announced change, now anyone running maps on their desktop can have access to 10,000 indoor maps. The service is only available for locations in Canada, Belgium, Denmark, France, Japan, Switzerland, Sweden, UK, and US. The search giant has compiled a complete list of which venues have indoor maps available on Google’s Indoor Maps availability Web page.
Google talked about indoor maps, saying that, “Before heading home for the holidays or out to shop on Black Friday, check out indoor maps of the airport or shopping mall on your desktop to better plan your trip. Simply zoom in on a building on Google Maps and you’ll automatically see a detailed floor plan with helpful labels for gates at the airport, stores within the mall, departments within a retail shop, as well as ATMs, restrooms and more.”
Google has a large mapping community and users should expect the indoor maps section to keep growing as people add their floor plans. The California based technology giant has been promoting its indoor maps service by also urging others to upload their floor plans making Google a very comprehensive mapping location.
Android has been available with Google Maps’ indoor maps for quite some time because mobile users could carry their smartphones around as they explored a building like an airport, shopping mall, transit station, library or museum. The desktop version makes it easier to plan trips or figure out where to go using a laptop or PC but will not have the mobility of Android.
