The computer science department of the University of Toronto has made it official on Tuesday, March 12th that search engine giant Google has obtained one of their startups known as DNNresearch Inc. The Toronto-based startup is creating under the guidance of professor Geoffrey Hinton and his team comprises of just two people, Ilya Sutskever and Alex Krizhevsky, who are his graduate students. DNNresearch Inc is dedicated to “deep learning” or deep neural networks and it was established last year and now it will work for one of the leading tech giants in the business.
The computer science department of the university has also made it known that professor Hinton will divide his time between a University of Toronto office, and Mountain View, California headquarters of Google. In the meantime, his team members Sutskever and Krizhevsky will move to Google.
On this pleasing occasion professor Hinton said that, “I am extremely excited about this fantastic opportunity to keep my research here in Toronto and, at the same time, help Google apply new developments in deep learning to make systems that help people.”
The purpose of acquiring DNNresearch Inc was that the Canadian firm will help Google in the monarchy of contextual recognition of images and voice. This is important to Google because with the passage of time image and voice-based search traffic is significantly increasingly over Google’s search engine. Therefore, with the assistance of innovative research from the startup Google will be able to segregate similar sounding concepts that actually have different meanings.
Due to this reason, such a search was highly required by Google as more and more users look up for concepts via their mobile devices.
Professor David Naylor, President of University of Toronto said that, “Geoffrey Hinton’s research is a magnificent example of disruptive innovation with roots in basic research. The discoveries of brilliant researchers, guided freely by their expertise, curiosity, and intuition, lead eventually to practical applications no one could have imagined, much less requisitioned.”
Sutskever and Krizhevsky has “dramatically improved” the recognition of computers for objects under the leadership of professor Hinton. Before acquiring DNNresearch Inc, Google has awarded $600,000 to its team of researchers as a gift in order to support the project.
Sven Dickenson, who is the chairperson of the department, has stated that it’s a great opportunity for the entire department and Hinton. He said, “In recent years, we have been expanding our industrial relations, and this acquisition represents a wonderful opportunity to strengthen our existing ties with Google, one of the world’s most innovative IT companies.”
