Google’s search volume is a great way to figure out what is currently popular and what is in demand. A recent study has shown that Google searches for gaming consoles shows that Microsoft’s next video game console Xbox 720 will be more popular that Japanese electronics maker Sony’s PS4.

The two competitors have not mentioned the next generation of gaming consoles but the industry has already named them Xbox 720 and the PlayStation 4. However, internet gaming news site Ludos Mundi has predicted that Microsoft’s Xbox 720 beat out the PlayStation 4 based on the Google searches users are already doping for the upcoming consoles.

Google Trends, a service from Google that uses search data to show the popularity of keywords, shows that that in the past year users have searched for Xbox far more than they have for the PS 4. The data shows that globally people search for Xbox 720 about 60 percent of the time, while the PS4 gets a 40 percent share. Microsoft’s lead becomes even more apparent in the US where 66 percent of the searches are for Xbox 720 while Sony only gets 34 percent.

Google Trends has previously predicted technology clashes quite accurately. One good example is the battle between the next-generation of DVD formats. Google searches showed that Blu-ray movies were a lot more popular than HD-DVD movies and the prediction came true as more people are purchasing Blu-ray movies.
