We finally know why the Apple’s Developer website was down for almost a week. According to iphoneincanda.com, there was a hacking attempt to steal the personal information of Apple developers. Apple Inc has already confirmed the news and right after the intruder attempted to hack the website, Apple notified its developers via email.

A spokesperson from Apple explained the incident last week, claiming that hackers attempted to extract confidential and sensitive information from Apple’s developer’s website. Apple, however, did not rule the possibility that some information such as phone numbers, developer’s names and addresses were accessed. The American based company took down the website as soon as they recorded suspicious activities on their servers.

Apple has already decided to completely overhaul their developer systems to cope with similar problems in the future. The servers, software and entire data base may also be upgraded in an effort to ensure continuous security. In a statement released on Thursday last week, Apple apologized to its customers about prolonged down time of its developer’s website and assured the website will be up again soon.

“Last Thursday, an intruder attempted to secure personal information of our registered developers from our developer website. Sensitive personal information was encrypted and cannot be accessed, however, we have not been able to rule out the possibility that some developers’ names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses may have been accessed. In the spirit of transparency, we want to inform you of the issue. We took the site down immediately on Thursday and have been working around the clock since then.

In order to prevent a security threat like this from happening again, we’re completely overhauling our developer systems, updating our server software, and rebuilding our entire database. We apologize for the significant inconvenience that our downtime has caused you and we expect to have the developer website up again soon,” notified Apple via email about the intrusion.

“Apple has independently confirmed to us that no servers storing customer info like credit cards or anything related to the App Store purchase process have been breached. The hackers also did not gain access to servers storing app code or app information at all. There was access to servers where encrypted information had been stored, but no evidence that this encrypted information had been accessed”, the IT giant further clarified.

Update: The Next Web reported that it was safe to purchase products on App Store following the hacking attempt.
