Canadian startup, HootSuite, has been prominently featured in news stories that have tracked the technology firms success. However the Vancouver based firm has come under fire from the users of popular website Reddit because of the unpaid internship positions at the company. When the issue first cropped up, HootSuite replied by making a post on its Facebook account and thanked people “for their concern.” However, the company did not expect to change the way it ran the company based on the users concerns. That changed on April 17 when the startups CEO Ryan Holmes accepted that their current practices were breaking the law. He also added that his firm would immediately correct the matter.

Holmes gave the Vancouver Sun a statement via email and said that, “It was brought to my attention on Friday, April 5th that HootSuite had unpaid internship postings on its website that may have been in contravention of the Employment Standards Act of BC. HootSuite conducted an immediate review with our Talent and Legal team and we have determined that some intern roles may not have been in compliance with Employment Standards Act of BC.”

The CEO went on to say that, “To completely remove outstanding doubt around this matter, we will immediately rectify the issue by offering full payment, including interest incurred, to unpaid interns who had roles within our company within the last six months that were not in accordance with the ESA BC.”

Holmes also added that, “HootSuite will continue to offer  its internship program, ensuring that future internship positions are compliant with the Employment Standards Act of BC. I remain confident that our program offers young professionals unique opportunities to build their careers and I will proudly continue to provide this option for those interested.”

The controversy is interesting because HootSuite was recently named the Best Company to Work For in British Columbia along with 100 other firms. This is why the startup receives 650 CV;s every month from prospective employees looking to secure a position at the well reputed firm. The Canadian startup has been a big success since it was launched and has become an example for other startups in the country.
