Several reports have asserted earlier that the CEO of HTC Peter Chou has made it known that he will quit if the brand new flagship smartphone of the company, the HTC One fails to do well. However, during an interview the HTC CEO shot down all such rumours and said that “There are a lot of rumours that say I would quit, but I never said that. I’m not going to find another job.” The speculations regarding Chou’s stepping down from his post did not come as a surprise because the Taiwanese smartphone maker is not performing well for the last two years due to a series of issues and mistakes. It is because of this very reason today HTC has lost a significant market share in the US smartphone market.
There was a time when Apple was the only company that was ahead of HTC in the US smartphone market, but now its share has dropped from a high of 9.3 percent in the first quarter of 2011 to 2.5 percent in the first quarter of this year. As a result of that a significant decline was also observed in the share price of HTC, as it has plunged down by 80 percent, whereas its earnings saw a decrease of 98 percent year-over-year. Apart from continuous issues and mistakes, the entry of Chinese smartphone making companies like Huawei and ZTE has also severely damaged the business of HTC in the US.
Highlighting the mistakes of HTC, senior manager of Taiwan’s Yuanta Financial Holdings, Jeng-Han Cheng said that, “HTC made mistakes in its product pricing and it had too many models, which confused consumers. But they have made improvements in recent months, such as streamlining its product line.”
Still one cannot say that Chou is responsible for all these problems and mistakes, as during his reign the company has also seen some highs, as HTC was able to zoom to the top of the smartphone market in the US. And recently the Taiwanese company has produced its first aluminium body flagship smartphone, the HTC One that was warmly greeted by consumers and still has decent demand.
HTC has not only used aluminium in its latest flagship phone, but also used the latest technology and offered consumers a new design that can easily entice new buyers. Most prominent feature of HTC One is the new blink feed that displays live updates for users just like the tiles on the Windows Phone 8. But developing an outstanding smartphone is not a key to success alone, as Chou and his team also needs to solve their production and other issues too in order to push HTC back to the top.
