It is not a hidden secret anymore that HTC is struggling in smartphone business, but in spite of it the company has given up yet, as first it launched first-rate flagship smartphone HTC One and then launched rolled out a smaller version of the device which referred as HTC One Mini. Rumours suggests that the Taiwanese company has also developed a bigger edition of HTC One, which perhaps is the first phablet of the company and leaked reports indicates that it will be called HTC One Max. However, it seems that to end its trouble HTC needs something more, as the latest report of Wall Street Journal claims that the Taiwanese smartphone maker is now developing its own operating system to cater Chinese market.

“HTC Corp is developing a mobile software system specifically for Chinese consumers, people familiar with the project say, as part of a big China bet that the Taiwanese smartphone maker hopes will help revive sliding sales.”

It is expected that the customised OS of HTC would be not much different from Google’s Android, as the unlike Samsung the Taiwan-based company is not trying to make a completely new operating system. However, at this point in time it would be too early to jump on conclusions, as the aforementioned report has not received any confirmation till now. Moreover, even if the report proved true the effort of creating a new OS by HTC looks more like a desperate attempt to save its sinking boat.

There is no doubt that China is huge market and every smartphone maker have a dream to capture it, but to capture it through a customised OS may sound little tricky. However, the WSJ report says HTC is not making this effort to gain something in the short term, as the company perhaps looking to play a long game by developing new business ties in China.

“The project is seen by HTC insiders partly as an effort to forge political and business ties in China, since third-party operating systems have little chance of actually competing against the dominance of Android and Apple’s iOS. In the second quarter, Android held 79% of the global smartphone market, while iOS snagged 14.2%, according to market research firm Gartner. No other operating system captured more than 4%.”

Let’s see how credible this report turns out to be, as the alleged strategy of HTC does not seem to be making much sense.
