In a big shake up at the video streaming website Hulu, the company’s founding chief executive officer (CEO) Jason Kilar and chief technology officer (CTO) Rich Tom have decided to call it a day on the company they had led from the first day.

Rumours had been doing the rounds that Kilar wished to leave Hulu with speculation suggesting a resignation as early as the summer of 2012. It took longer than that though.

Recently both Kilar and Tom in an email circulated to company staffers, which was later put up on Hulu’s corporate blog, made their decision on resigning from their posts by the end of the first quarter public.

With both of Hulu’s heavyweight executives leaving together it can be speculated that a new start-up maybe on the cards in the future. Kilar has led the company for over five and a half years with his departure suggesting that Hulu’s plans for the future do not meet his ambitions.

Variety magazine in the summer of 2012 acquired an internal company memo suggesting that Hulu had a plan to transition to a new CEO.

The memo also said that Hulu’s expansion to India will be put on hold with the company remaining limited to its current markets of the United States and Japan.

Hulu was also about to lose current season content from its main backers, News Corp. and Disney according to the memo making it less competitive.

This is a big blow for Hulu as two of its most experienced leaders will leave by the end of the first quarter and it remains to be seen how the video streaming company will adapt to this massive change in its environment.
