Ottawa based Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) has stated in a report titled “Employment, Investment, and Revenue in the Canadian App Economy” that Canada’s app economy has created 51,700 jobs nation wide. The ICTC conducted a survey across the country to get an idea of the mobile software sector and how it has impacted the job markets and economy in different areas of Canada.

In the report the ICTC states that, “It is estimated that there are 22,800 technical professionals among the direct employment of 41,300 in the Canadian app economy. They help the Canadian app ecosystem generate $775 million per year in revenue. Generated revenues are estimated to reach $1.19 billion in 2014 (up 54%) and $2.2 billion in 2016 (up 184%).”

The consulting and market research groups report also shows that Ontario has the largest share of the app employment market. The report states that, “A conservative multiplier of 1.25 is used in this study to estimate the breadth of the Canadian app economy. This implies that every 4 direct jobs in the app economy generate 1 job in the rest of the economy. Estimated 41,300 direct employments in the app economy generate another 10,400 indirect and induced jobs. The total app economy and related employment in Canada, therefore, is 51,700. The geographic composition of this employment is as follows: Ontario (47%), Quebec (22%), British Columbia (15%), the Prairies (11%), and the Atlantic region (5%).”

The detailed analysis also discusses how much it costs to get mobile applications developed in Canada. It shows that service apps can range from $5000 to $200,000, IP Apps come in at $10,000 to $250,000 and that average apps can cost about $20,000.

The ICTC survey also showcases some encouraging numbers for revenue generation. It states that in Canada 13 million smartphone users spend about $51.92 per person on apps every year. This totals out to $675 million annually.

The report gives more details when its states that, “The main sources of revenues stem from four sources, namely: app downloads; in-app purchases; advertisements; and subscriptions. 13 million smartphone users in Canada spend $675 million annually on apps and related expenditures. This is estimated to grow to $1.12 billion a year by 2014 (up 66%) and $1.82 billion by 2016 (up 170%).”
