Research in Motion is pulling out all stops for a successful launch of its new Blackberry 10 range of smartphones. The Canada based mobile phone maker is incentivising application developers to build new applications for the Blackberry 10 so that the phone on launch has a healthy selection for users.

This is RIM’s do-or-die moment, as the smartphone maker has a final opportunity to regain lost market share from fierce rivals, Samsung, Apple and Nokia. For the Blackberry 10 to break the stranglehold of rival devices RIM will require a large number of applications to attract users.

To do that RIM is getting app developers on board, and recently organised two Port-a-Thon events for developers to submit apps for the new Blackberry 10. A number of incentives were also given to encourage developers with those developers who submitted two to five apps first given a free PlayBook while those who submitted more than five apps put into a random draw to receive a new Blackberry 10 Dev Alpha device.

Cash was also on offer with developers whose apps got approved given $ 100 for each submission. The incentives worked like a charm with RIM receiving 15,000 applications in just two days. Not all apps will be approved but this is a positive step by RIM to gain developer confidence while enriching its own app store ahead of the Blackberry 10 launch.

The Blackberry 10 has been long awaited by tech fans and RIM hopes that the new phones running on the brand new feature heavy operating system will help it regain its lost market traction helping it to survive in the increasingly competitive smartphone market.
