Intel’s processors dominate the personal computer market, however, the technology giant has failed to bring that same level of dominance to the fast growing tablet market. Intel though plans to change that soon and revealed a new line of processors that it hopes will set a new benchmark in the tablet segment.

Manufacturers have shunned Intel’s previous offerings, preferring to use the less battery intensive and more powerful ARM based chips rather than Intel’s Clover Trail offering for tablet devices. Samsung, Nvidia, Apple and Qualcomm have taken a lead over Intel in the tablet segment with their ARM based processors.

To turn the tide, Intel at its Monday press conference during CES 2013 in Las Vegas unveiled a brand new quad-core Atom processor, code-named Bay Trail, which will replace the current Clover Trail offering while providing twice the processing power for tablets.

Manufactured on the 22-nanometre process, the new chips will, according to Intel, be available in new tablets just in time for the 2013 holiday season helping the technology giant to regain lost ground in this fast growing segment. During the press conference Intel executives claimed that the new processor will allow for even thinner tablets while providing all day battery life as well as weeks of standby.

The processing giant also showed samples of tablets running on the new Atom quad-core processor and expressed hope that major manufacturers will adopt Bay Trail before the end of 2013.

Another segment where Intel has also found itself lagging behind the competition is smartphone processors and during the Monday presser it unveiled a new Atom platform which is targeted towards the low cost segment catering mostly to developing countries such as India and China where low cost devices are all the rage.

Intel’s new smartphone platform includes an Atom Z2420 processor providing a maximum of 1.2 GHz in addition to an HSPA+ Intel modem which delivers value for money while allowing for solid smartphone features.

It has taken Intel long enough to prioritise these fast growing market segments and it remains to be seen how the technology giant’s latest offerings will appeal to third party tablet and smartphone manufacturers.
