According to several sources, Apple is set on changing its dock connectors to a much smaller version for the upcoming iPhone as well as all new devices henceforth. This would also include a new iPod nano and touch as well as the anticipated 7” iPad mini (TQ was on it).
Thanks to macrumors.com and nowherelse.fr, photos of the new connector have hit the internet comparing it to the USB end of the standard iPod cable we have all come to know and love. Although the site states that the validity of the photos cannot be confirmed, what is pictured is in line with everything that is being said about the new connector.
The site also goes on to state that the connector’s metal frame acts as a grounding pin, creating a 9-pin connection. The number of pins has been another area of debate, with rumours mentioning both an 8 and 9-pin connector being possible options.
The photo is claimed to be from one of Apple’s Asian manufacturers, however once again there is no telling how accurate the photo is. What we do know however is that what is seen is not the final product, and rumours still exist that the new connector can be used in either orientation.
