Online video was transformed by YouTube and user generated content. Now different businesses and organizations around the globe are producing their own content and looking for ways to transmit their videos online. Kaltura has developed an open source solution to this problem and the web video platform recently got $25 million in cash from new investors Mitsui Global Investment and Orix Ventures. Previous investors who had already put $43 million into the startup also added funds this round and included Nexus Venture Partners, Intel Capital, .406 Ventures and Avalon Ventures.
The New York-based Kaltura competes against other well known startups like Brightcove, Ooyala and thePlatform. The company claims that it is the world’s first “Open Source Online Video Platform” and currently has 100,000 clients using its software to deliver “advanced customized video, photo and audio functionalities” to their users online. All this made possible through Kaltura’s “easy deployment of custom work-flows involving video creation, ingestion, publishing, management, syndication, engagement, monetization and analysis.” The company offers a free version of their platform a paid version that has “streaming, hosting, transcoding, analytics, ad serving, support and maintenance packages, and professional development.”
Since its inception in 2006, Kaltura has grown to become a force to reckon with in the web video sector and is also a founding member of the Open Video Alliance.
