Beauty startup, Lacquerous, has figured out that most women buy a lot of nail polish but never end up using the entire bottle. In most cases the colour of nail polish falls out of fashion and the bottle is left half full until it is either thrown away or the colour comes back in style. Lacquerous wants to get rid of all that waste and offer users a Netflix like service where subscribers pay $18 a month to get three different types of nail colours every month. These can then be sent back and exchanged for newer colours. Currently the site has 70 different shades from premium brands like Butter London, Chanel, Dior, MAC and Tom Ford. These normally sell for $14 to $30 a bottle.

Lacquerous offers users the chance to use a wide variety of new hues and pay less. They also have the advantage of offering a product that consumers are already trained to share. Liza Kindred is a New York fashion startup consultant and has worked with Co-Founder Ashlene Nand to launch Lacquerous. She states that, “Nail lacquer is one of the only things that can be shared. It’s similar to going to a salon, where you pull the bottle of polish off the wall and share it and put it back up.”

Lacquerous is careful about hygiene and according to Lacquerous, “We inspect [bottles] to make sure they’re uncontaminated, which is actually more than they do in the salon.” She adds that, “The idea is really easy for people to grasp, and there’s a huge demand out there.” The site will launch next week and already has a waiting list with thousands of eager users to be.
