There is no doubt that YouTube is a premier video sharing website under the Google umbrella that streams millions of videos each month, but in spite of this fact, none of the big companies, be it Microsoft, Apple or others have tried to take it to the big screen. As a result of that, YouTube is still mostly viewed on PCs or inefficiently on WiFi enabled video game consoles and televisions.
However, now it seems that Google has finally broken the shackles in their attempt to bring YouTube to big-screen TVs thanks to a recent app update from the company that will connect Android devices automatically with Google TV seamlessly.
Mario Queiroz, Google’s Product VP revealed details about the app update by saying that this will allow Android device users to connect with Google TV in order to control and watch YouTube through a tablet or smartphone.
Describing the second screen, Queiroz said that, “There is a lot of talk in the industry about the second screen, but we believe it’s important that we’re using a concept like that to solve a real user problem as opposed to having another feature, just so we can check a box. The second screen makes it better, as opposed to just being another feature.”
Earlier, users first had to sign into YouTube Remote on their smartphone and then to YouTube Leanback on their Google TV in order to watch YouTube videos on big screen. Now with this new app update, Google has gone one step beyond and completely streamlined this interface. From now on, the only thing required to open YouTube on the big screen is a YouTube app, as Queiroz says, “You don’t have to do anything–the app is automatically paired with your Google TV.”
She also added that even, “If my daughter walks into the room and she has her phone, she’s also automatically paired on YouTube, so she can pick a video, add it to the queue, and then we are all choosing videos. We don’t have to fight over the remote.”
In short, this new app update from Google has made things quite easy for Android device users to watch YouTube on their TV screens. Hopefully, soon iOS device users will also get to use such an app despite of tussle between Google and Apple, with Queiroz hinting at the possibility.
