International Data Corporation, commonly known as IDC, has recently released a new forecast report related to the tablet shipments, which projects that the future of slates is pretty bright, as roughly 60 percent growth is expected on a year-to-year basis. Moreover, the sales of tablets are anticipated to reach 229.3 million units which will make it one of the best selling devices in the world. However, this growth for tablets will come at the cost of notebooks, as their market share will probably witness another dip for the second straight year.

Program Manager for IDC’s Mobility Trackers, Ryan Reith explained it by saying that, “What started as a sign of tough economic times has quickly shifted to a change in the global computing paradigm with mobile being the primary benefactor. Tablets surpassing portables in 2013, and total PCs in 2015, marks a significant change in consumer attitudes about compute devices and the applications and ecosystems that power them. IDC continues to believe that PCs will have an important role in this new era of computing, especially among business users. But for many consumers, a tablet is a simple and elegant solution for core use cases that were previously addressed by the PC.”

IDC’s report also revealed that Apple, which is holding top position in tablet market, seems to be losing ground to low-priced Android tablets, as these tablets have boost the growth rate of current slate shipments. In its latest report, IDC has also projected the average selling price of slates will roughly fall down by 11 percent to touch the $381 mark. Compared to PCs that have a current average selling price of $635, tablets seem like a bargain.

Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker’s research analyst, Jitesh Ubrani said that, “Apple’s success in the education market has proven that tablets can be used as more than just a content consumption or gaming device. These devices are learning companions, and as tablet prices continue to drop, the dream of having a PC for every child gets replaced with the reality that we can actually provide a tablet for every child.”

IDC has also predicted in its latest report that the prices of tablets will slide down further, as iPad Mini has seriously affected their sales with its low price tag. These were not the only projections that IDC has made regarding the tablets in the report, but it has also shown the change in screen sizes of slates.
