HP was not able to make it big with its webOS but it seem LG Electronics believes it can make something of it an the South Korean company is looking to give the operating system a second chance. Therefore, LG has not only purchased the webOS from HP but it has also acquired its intellectual property from the information technology corporation. After that the company made the announcement on Monday, February 25th that now webOS completely belongs to LG including source code, websites and documentation. Apart from this, LG has also obtained licenses from HP plus the patents that the American corporation received from Palm when it acquired the platform back in 2010.

On this occasion the President and CFO of LG Electronics, Skott Ahn said that, “It creates a new path for LG to offer an intuitive user experience and Internet services across a range of consumer electronics devices.”

LG will now take the webOS to its new labs in San Francisco and Sunnyvale, where it will join forces with other teams in the company to offer the software on its devices. According to the report LG will first install the webOS in its forthcoming smart TVs in order to make its television more superlative as compared to its competing Korean company Samsung and other manufacturers in the market. LG is producing connected TV sets from 2007 and it has developed them in a way that they can include gestures, apps and various technologies so there would not be much difference left between second screens and television sets.

In contrast to LG, when HP used to have ownership of webOS the company failed to take it to the next level, as smartphones and slates running the software showed dull sales. As a result of that the US-based corporation finally decided to abandon the development of software and devices running the operating system back in August 2011. After that HP open-sourced webOS so developers could bring something out of the software but also did not work for the company.

On the other hand, LG is looking quite exciting after acquiring the webOS from HP and it is looking to bring a revolution with its upcoming smart TVs after installing the software. Apart from this, one can also clearly see that LG has changed its strategy, as earlier it has shifted its focus towards smartphones. It is because this very reason LG has now introduced a premium line-up of brand new smartphones to boost sales.
