When LG lost its low-end mobile phone market share to Chinese smartphone manufacturers, the South Korean electronics company decided to revisited its strategy and shift gears in order to compete against big tech companies such as Apple, Samsung, HTC, Sony and others. As a result of that move, now it seems that LG is getting more serious about future products. This could be judged from the fact that the Korean company has recently revealed that it is going to bring in a new kind of smartphone for the fourth quarter of 2013 that will have a flexible display. Shortly after that LG has divulged through a press release that the company will show off an “unbreakable and flexible” 5-inch and 7-inch displays in Vancouver at the SID Display Week 2013 within this week.

The 5-inch display of LG will have a “1.0mm bezel allowing production of borderless smartphones,” whereas the 7-inch display will be used for tablets plus it will feature an HD resolution “that exceeds 300 pixels per inch (PPI).”

“LG Display will also introduce 5-inch and 7-inch HD LCD panels based on Oxide TFT, seen as the next generation TFT technology as it offers high investment efficiency in producing thin, high transparency, and low power consumption displays. LG Display, which utilized this technology in its large-sized OLED displays for the first time in the world, will expand its expertise to LCD panel development thereby leading the market.

The 5-inch HD panel will feature 1.0mm bezel allowing production of borderless smartphones that are lightweight and emit significantly less heat. The 7-inch HD LCD panel is equipped with touch function-embedded technology enabling superior touch functionality in thin and lightweight mobile products.”

The CTO and Executive Vice President of LG Display, Dr. Sang-Deok Yeo said that, “With the resulting rapid need for new display advancements, LG Display, at the forefront of these trends, is well positioned to lead the market with its differentiated and cutting-edge technologies.”

So it’s clear now that LG has made all the necessary arrangements to produce devices with “unbreakable and flexible” displays. However, the smartphone manufacturer has not revealed which countries will first see the 5-inch and 7-inch flexible display devices, but there is a high probability that the company may first release the mobile devices in South Korea.

Still it’s too early to make any prediction, as nothing is official yet. On top of this LG also requires time to produce devices with flexible display before they come to market.
