Numerous leaked images and videos have already unveiled the forthcoming flagship smartphone from LG, the G2, which the Korean OEM is most probably going to announce at its upcoming August 7th event. However, several recent reports have also hinted that LG might also take the Optimus name out of its next gen smartphone, as the company is planning to use it only for its low-level devices. Finally on Wednesday, July 17th LG officially made it known and proved all the previous reports true that the successor of the Optimus G series smartphone will only be called LG G2. With this announcement, LG also declared that it is reserving the “Vu” brand name for its future mobile phones that will boast 4:3 displays.

President and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, Dr. Jong-seok Park said on this occasion that, “Our vision is to make LG’s newest G devices synonymous with excellence, raising the bar even further for the ultimate in user experience. The new G2 will build upon the excellent reputation established by previous G Series products.”

This was not the first time that LG has revealed information related to the G2 smartphone. Prior to sending out the invites for its August 7th press event, the Korean manufacturer announced that the successor of Optimus G will sport a Snapdragon 800 processor. Apart from this, high quality leaked images and a video of the G2 have already revealed that the smartphone has volume buttons on its back right under the rear camera lens, while the home, back and view app controls integrated in the display rather than at the bottom of the phone.

With these new integrations and addition of Snapdragon 800 processor, LG has shown that it is ready to compete against top tech smartphone giants like Apple and Samsung. Previously the South Korean company was more focused on producing low-end mobile phones, but different Chinese phone makers captured that market and forced LG to shift gears.

As a result of that LG decided to jump in the bigger game and at the start of this year and the company rolled out the 5.5-inch Optimus G Pro that proved a real head turner for the Korean manufacturer. In spite of the fact that LG has released the Optimus G Pro in select markets. In fact, G pro was initially launched in South Korea only, where it was warmly greeted by the consumers.
