We recently heard a rumour recently that the Chinese government is considering lifting a decade-long ban on gaming consoles in the country. In 2000, seven Chinese ministries banned the sale, manufacture and import of gaming consoles, believing that they could harm physical and metal development of the young.

While the negative impacts of the gaming industry on the youngsters across the globe have been discussed and debated a lot, a ban nevertheless was not implemented in huge markets, but China took them rather seriously and went on officially ban the gaming consoles.

It would be an understatement to say that people in China never experienced the fun of gaming consoles when they were banned, because these products were sometimes acquired illegally, through black market. However, making the availability of these consoles legal will altogether be a different story.

If the Chinese government lifts the ban, Sony and Microsoft could be the biggest beneficiaries. Among many tech giants, Apple and Samsung do not face any problem reaching the Chinese markets because they mostly deal in smartphones and other electronic devices. Not to forget that they make heavy profits out of the huge market.

Sony and Microsoft, however, have not got the liberty to share the same fortune. While Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox are hit all over the world, the Chinese market is yet to sale these products. As per some rough estimates by Forbes, these companies could make billions if the ban is lifted. Nintendo will also be among the beneficiaries.
