There’s poised to be a new entrant in Canada’s wireless phone market and they are looking to address some unmet needs that might interest you. Lycamobile, a UK based firm is targeting a significant portion of Canada’s population; immigrants and those with relatives overseas who are looking for international unlimited talk and text plans.

Lyca, who operate in 16 countries and serve 20 million customers worldwide, will operate as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) – meaning that they will enter into an agreement with a mobile network operator at bulk rates in order to sell service of their own to end consumers. According to this Mobilesyrup article, the likeliest partner is Rogers, who are continuing to look for growth opportunities as Canada’s largest operator and service.

The company looks to stick to their bread and butter by offering plans that target the needs of “immigrants and other ethnic consumers who regularly talk and text with family and friends living overseas” said CEO, Milind Kangle. “We believe that our customers should get the same quality connection as any other customer would get in any other part of the world. And we believe that the communication should be affordable – as in the should be able to make daily calls without having to feel the pinch in their wallet.”

The expectation is for Lycamobile to launch later this year in diverse and large cities Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal offering unlimited talk and text plans. Those impressed by their low cost plans will have to bring their own handsets and simply insert a Lycamobile SIM to get going.

We look forward to seeing what the proven company with a definite target market will do.
