An incredibly innovative Wi-Fi enabled light bulb called LIFX claims with great reason to be ‘the smartest light bulb you’ve ever experienced’. The LED bulb is impressive in a variety of ways ranging from its multiple colours, full Smartphone control and energy efficiency that can allow the bulb to last up to 25 years.
The LIFX is created by Australian Phil Bosua, the creator of another popular Kickstarter project, Scanbox; an affordable and portable folding scanner that creates high resolution scans using your Smartphone. Scanbox exceeded its $12,500 goal by raising an impressive $184,499 in July of this year and was widely acclaimed. The LIFX appears to be just as popular for Bosua, as the project has raised $913,971 with 57 days remaining in the campaign.
The incredible light bulbs are controlled through the use of a free app available on both iPhone and Android devices. The app can be used to turn the bulb off and on, adjusting brightness and also select from a collection of colours. Even more impressively, bulbs can be put on a timer to automatically turn off and on based on a given schedule. The only requirement is that the controls are done over a Wi-Fi network. The company plans to expand the app collection to include the Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.
Bosua, to his credit has offered his LIFX bulbs in a variety of bulb types to ensure that there is a bulb for you regardless of the type you require. Given the promised shelf life and the investment into the technology and parts, the LIFX is to be considered as more of an investment than a run of the mill light bulb. One bulb will run you $69 US (shipping free to Canada), 2 bulbs for $99, 4 bulbs for $196 and so on using a tiered system.
