Microsoft thrilled Windows Phone 8 fans around the world when they released new app details at their OS related press conference held on Tuesday in San Francisco. In this media session, the company not only divulged details regarding Windows Phone 8, but also confirmed that they will be introducing previously rumoured features such as “Guest Mode” for children and deep Skype integration into the phone’s interface. The guest mode, known as “Kid’s Corner” allows phone owners to curate specific apps and games that their children can access while denying access to others when children play with or use said devices.
According to Microsoft the new Skype integration will allow calls received via Skype to be accepted and made as easily as those from the user’s usual carrier. Additionally, the VoIP app will run in the background and receive calls without consuming battery while continuing to feature the distinct ring we have all grown accustomed to.
It was also confirmed that users will also get to experience new versions of Facebook and Twitter apps on Windows Phone 8 (WP8) in a few days time. With these newly designed apps, users will be able to see their calendar entries from Facebook as well as tweets and replies on Twitter the moment they turn on the screen.
Besides the above, a new feature called Rooms will also be available on the new operating system. Through this new app users can creates virtual chat rooms for themselves, family members or friends while also being able to share calendars, lists and photos within this space. The best part about Rooms is that it not only works well with mobiles that are powered by Windows, but also functions with iOS and Android devices, albeit to a lesser extent. This will allow Windows Phone 8 users to chat and share with their friends or family members that use devices based off of the aforementioned platforms.
Moreover, several new games were announced to be coming to Windows Phone 8’s Xbox Live, as app developers have joined forces with Microsoft to create a rich gaming experience. The list of upcoming games includes popular titles Temple Run, Jetpack Joyride, Draw Something!, Words With Friends and much more.
Lastly the company also noted that users will be able to adjust the re-size the tiles in their latest home screen. Windows is also banking on the fact that their NFC-enabled wallet will change the way people perform their mobile transactions moving forward.
