Microsoft Messenger Team has asked its users to upgrade their messenger to Skype, the company’s video and audio communication software, which Microsoft bought in 2011. Microsoft Messenger has been serving the world since 1999 and it became a household name until other messengers including Skype started gaining popularity. Now that Microsoft owns Skype it wants all its users to upgrade to the new software that provides even better facilities.

Initially, Microsoft had announced to upgrade all its users to Skype by March 15, but now the process has been delayed. According to the email sent by the Messenger Team to its users:

“Starting April 8th, we will begin upgrading customers from Messenger to Skype. The process will take a few weeks to complete. April 8th is the first day you may be required to upgrade. This is a bit later than the March 15th date we previously mentioned to some ofyou as we wanted to give you more time to make the transition.”

It is quite easy to upgrade to Skype. The users will not need to create a new account, and they can use their Microsoft Messenger account details to start using Skype. Once they sign in, their previous contacts will already be there. The email explains:

“You’ll be able to instant message and make video calls with them just like before, and start discovering new ways of staying in touch, including Skype on your mobile or tablet.”

Those users who have not used Skype before can sign in with their Microsoft account and see their Messenger contacts in Skype. Those users who already have a Skype account can upgrade to the latest version and then sign in with their Microsoft account. They can merge their existing Microsoft account with their current Skype account.

Tom’s Hardware quoted Director Marketing Integration, Skype, Parri Munsell, as saying:

“We want everyone who uses Messenger to have a positive experience. Upgrading to Skype can help you communicate in flexible ways, and be connected on more devices and platforms including Windows, Mac, iOS, Windows Phone, Android and soon Blackberry.”

Microsoft has taken the measure to upgrade its users to Skype all over the world with the exception of mainland China.
